Central Instittute of Open Schooling Uttar Pardesh,Lucknow was established on 1st December, 1986. Earlier, the Regional Centre, Lucknow was looking after whole of Uttar Pradesh but with the creation of new state of Uttarakhand and expansion and decentralisation of various activities, new Regional Centres at Aligarh, Varanasi, Dehradun and Noida were established and districts from the jurisdiction of Regional Centre, Lucknow were transferred to these Regional Centres. Even after such divisions, Regional Centre, Lucknow is still one of the largest Regional Centres in terms of jurisdiction and enrolment of learners.
